SPOILER ALERT: you may not want to read these questions before you hear the sermon.
1. Read Romans 16:1-16. What might repeated phrases like “in the Lord” and “in Christ” teach us about what united the early church? In light of some of our modern-day divisions, how might the unity that they experienced be an important reminder for our own church?
2. In addition to ethnic diversity, the early church also embraced social diversity. How does it strike you to learn that many of the names in Paul’s list may have been slaves or former slaves? Consider Galatians 3:26-29 and Colossians 3:11.
3. Why might it be important for us to distinguish the slavery in 1st century Bible times from the slavery in our more recent American history?
4. How do you feel about the level of social and economic diversity in our church? What might be some ways that we could improve in these areas?
5. Verse 5,10,11,14,15 refer to as many as five different house churches in Rome. What do you think it might have been like to be part of a house church rather than worship at a separate church building?
6. Why might it be important for us to be more concerned about the gathered people than the gathering place?
