1. During the Christmas season, do you tend to be more interested in tidings of comfort, or tidings of joy? Explain.

2. Read Luke 2:21-24. What might these various customs and rituals teach us about Jesus and His parents?

3. Read Luke 2:25-26. What do you find particularly consoling or comforting about the coming of Christ?

4. Read Luke 2:27-32. What do you think Simeon meant by “my eyes have seen your salvation”? What do these verses tell us about that salvation? (See John 3:19)

5. Read Luke 2:33-35. What do you think Simeon meant by his dire warning to Mary? Have you ever experienced division in your family or a friend group due to differences of opinion over Jesus? If so, what have you found comforting or reassuring in those situations?

6. Read Luke 2:36-38. How might Anna’s example of consistent worship, fasting, and prayer be an encouragement to us today?

7. As we consider any burdens that we’re carrying this Advent season, how might it be encouraging to look forward to God’s complete comfort that’s still to come? How might you explain the “now and not yet” aspect of our redemption?
