1. Read Luke 5:1-11. In verse 5, Simon Peter was having a pretty bad day at work. Share about one of your worst days at work. What was it that made it so bad or so frustrating, or that made it feel so pointless?

2. Verse 1 mentions that the people were crowding around Jesus to listen to the word of God. Read Luke 4:32. What do you think it means for us today that Jesus’ words have authority?

3. What does verse 5 tell us about the previous night’s fishing and the likely mood of the fishermen? How does your faith tend to hold up when you have a bad day?

4. Why do you think Peter tells Jesus to go away from him in verse 8? Have you had times in your faith when you’ve felt something like this? Explain.

5. Read Isaiah 6:5. In Luke 5:8 Simon Peter’s response reveals an accurate self-understanding that he’s a sinful man. Why do you think this might be important for someone who wants to follow Jesus?

6. How might following Jesus impact our daily work and our call to “fish for people”? How do you think our daily work can point other people toward God, reveal the work of Christ within us, & demonstrate the hope that we’ve found in the gospel?
