1. Read Romans 12:17-21. When you think about the topic of vengeance, is there a particular story or movie that comes to mind? How might these stories illustrate our human tendency to repay evil for evil?

2. Romans 12:17 says to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.” Is this even possible? Explain.

3. What’s your gut response when verse 18 urges us to live at peace with everyone? What do you think it would take for us to actually accomplish this?

4. How might returning good for evil affect our reputation? How might it affect the person who did the evil? If we’re not supposed to seek our own revenge, then does that mean we should never seek protection from evil or punishment for evildoers? Explain. (See Romans 13:4; 14:12)

5. In verse 19, do you find the words, “leave room for God’s wrath,” encouraging, frustrating, or something else? What advice might you give someone who is struggling to believe that God is trustworthy in regard to how He is handling evil? (See 1 Peter 2:21-23, Proverbs 20:22, and Ezekiel 33:11)

6. Why do you think it’s not enough to simply not refrain from repaying evil for evil (verse 17)? Why do you think God calls us to overcome evil with good (verses 20-21)?
