1. Read Exodus 20:8-11. Why do you think God commanded a day of Sabbath rest for the Jewish people? (See Deuteronomy 5:12-15 and Mark 2:27)
2. Read Luke 6:1-5. Why do you think the Pharisees were upset about the disciples eating the kernels of grain? (See Deuteronomy 23:25 and Exodus 34:21) How do you think God’s people can discern between what’s allowable and what’s unlawful?
3. According to Luke 6:5, what gave Jesus the right to determine what was lawful to do on the Sabbath? (Consider Daniel 7:13-14) What do you think this teaches us about Jesus?
4. Read Luke 6:6-11. Why do you think the Pharisees were watching Jesus so closely in verse 7? And why do you think Jesus told the man with the shriveled hand to stand in front of everyone?
5. What point would you say that Jesus is making in verse 9? How might we apply this principle to our lives today?
6. Verse 11 says that the Pharisees and teachers of the law were furious over what Jesus had done. What do you think may have kept them from being happy for the man who was healed, or from rejoicing in Jesus decision to heal him? (Consider Luke 5:37-39)
7. Skim through Luke chapters 4 and 5. What different kinds of authority and power has Jesus displayed so far? If we put all of this together, what do you think this teaches us about Him?
